Brother HL-1440 Laser Printer

I have had two of these printers over the past 3 years. Each worked well initially. However, after 1-2 yrs of use significant streaking began to appear on printouts. As has been mentioned before, the drum assembly costs more then the printer. Will not buy again.

when using in an office environment, both of the 1440s I bought are spent after less than a year of use. They are falling apart and jamming uncontrolably. Wish I could remember where I bought them... I'd return them, since the warantee hasn't quite ran out. They were great for about 5-6 months then started jamming uncontrolably. We replaced 1240s with these "upgraded" versions. The 1240s were...

Brother HL-1440 Laser Printer

Strengths: Fast, relatively cheap

Weakness: Not dependable

I've owned several personal laser printers in the past. This one was very good initially. After one year of use, I started to get gray papers with vertical lines. It turns out that this is a frequent problem with the drummer for this model, as I found out through internet discussion forums. Well, a replacement drum is $150, a new Brother 1440 is on sale for about $120... Hmmm... anyway, I'm...

Brother HL-1440 Laser Printer

Strengths: Brother HL-1440: Great for Small Business, Home Office text output. Initially affordable, Affordable consumables, Low Total Cost of Ownership, Low maintenance, Low frustration factor for users.

Weakness: Brother HL-1440: A little slow on graphical output due to lacking memory (can be upgraded). Duplexing is semi-automatic - meaning it is manual, with software guidance.

I am an IT professional who provides support and consulting for small businesses, non-profits and home office PC users. This printer is an amazing tool for my clients. It is quick and easy for me to setup (costing them less), it is generally maintenance free (save the occasional toner replacement) and the consumables (i.e. toner and drum units) are good quality while also being inexpensive. Many...

Brother HL-1440 Laser Printer

Strengths: Fast, high print quality, low cost

Weakness: Design of paper tray is kind of awkward.

I've owned a refurb 1440 for about 10 months. The print quality is excellent and it prints very fast. I have had ZERO problems with this machine including installation for use on WinXP. Additionally, I think I've had one paper jam the entire time. This printer is an excellent value for the money.

Brother HL-1440 Laser Printer

Strengths: Fast, Clean printing, excellent page counter for drum and toner information.

Weakness: Prints face down--for checks just order stacked in reverse order.

I have almost 100,000 pages on my 1240 model. My accounting clients have a lot more than that on this model. A great price for a SUPER PRINTER!!!

Brother HL-1440 Laser Printer

Strengths: Low purchase cost. Fast printing. Good text and graphics. Great laser printer for the cost.

Weakness: Haven't experienced any yet. Prints and performs as expected.

I've printed about 1000 pages so far with this printer without a paper jam over a 4 month period. I have the printer connected via a USB cable to a PC running Windows XP Pro and setup wasn't hard at all, other than having to go to Brother website to download the Windows XP driver that wasn't on the printer's install CDROM. I also have the printer shared (Windows XP Pro computer to a PC running...

Brother HL-1440 Laser Printer

Strengths: Good quality and speed for the price.

Weakness: Wore out too soon.

Mine (the earlier HL-1240 model) is connected to a Windows XP network and every computer in the house (running Windows XP and Windows 2000) can print to it with no problems.

Brother HL-1440 Laser Printer

Strengths: Fast, inexpensive

Weakness: Small memory; can't easily cancel jobs, but this is probably true of most fast laser printers. No automatic duplexing.

I have printed thousands of pages on this printer and the only trouble it ever gave me was it jammed when I printed a 150-page document unattended. This was because the printer was in a shelf with a low ceiling and the paper backed up into the printer. If your document is graphic intensive output will be considerably slower. Appears to have a sleeker, more sturdy design than the comparable HP...

Brother HL-1440 Laser Printer

Strengths: Inexpensive, quality output, good toner life.

Weakness: Single button interface, can't properly cancel jobs, badly design sleep mode.

My only real complaint is the printer's sleep mode. You must manually wake up the printer and wait and wait before sticking a sheet of paper into the manual feed slot. Sounds minor, but it happens every time. If a job goes wild, holding the button (it only has one button) is supposed to cancel the job. It never works for me, I have to cycle power. The printer is very good at paper handling,...
