Lord of the Rings: Return of the King for GameCube

Strengths: The graphics are breath-taking. The melee scenes wonderfully portray what we see in the movies.

Weakness: The only complaint I have is that the Co-op mode only allows for two people to engage in the fun.

The above and following review was written by my 13-year-old son: I recommand this violent, gore-filled game only to teens within the age group the box suggests. This game is very enjoyable and addictive. Anyone looking for a thrill will be able to discover one in this game.

Big screen to the smaller screen

Strengths: Generally follows the movie storyline, enjoyable gameplay, good graphics

Weakness: No party system

Return of the King was a good translation of movie to game. You alternate between characters each level, which guides you through different areas present in the movie. The down side is the lack of a party system. If there is anyone else fighting with you, the AI tends to disappoint at times during battles. Being able to pick some characters to follow you along during levels would have been nice....

Great game, but short

Strengths: Fun multiplayer, three distinct paths to play through, great graphics

Weakness: Short - levels are generally quick and there aren't too many of them

To elaborate on the strengths and weaknesses: Playing the game through multiplayer mode is great. It adds a lot of replay time. Also, leveling up each of the nine characters will take awhile. Weaknesses: levels are short, especially if you've beaten it before and are playing through with another character. Battle can get a bit hectic, leading me to just sit there mashing the "A" key until stuff...

Lord of the Rings Return of the King

Strengths: Best way to play through the movie

Weakness: More button mashing combo-fest action

Like the Two Towers game before it, Return of the King is basically a button-mashing combo-fest 3D fighter. If you like that sort of thing you will probably like this game very much. The appeal for the non-fighter fan is simply the ability to play as some of the coolest characters ever put to paper (and screen). Like the Two Towers game you play through the (15) levels in a linear fashion, with a...

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

Strengths: Switching between storyline branches, embedded film footage.

Weakness: Poor camera functionality in close quarters.

I am generally not a fan of licensed games as they tend to simply re-tell the story of a movie or book with somewhat forced results. But, being a general nerd (and finding Return of the King for a good price) I decided what the heck! There aren't many RPGs for Gamecube so I'll give this a try. I wasn't disappointed. Control is relatively easy, and the levels are not universally path-driven. The...

Almost like having both a DVD movie and Game in one

Strengths: Pretty much everything!

Weakness: Hardly any!

The gameplay of this game is magnificent. But it has it's ups and downs, a game is never perfect. You have the opportunity to choose between different languages: Spanish, Dutch, English, Portugese and Italian. When you're playing Story Mode you can choose between single player or mulitplayer (with a friend). What they did very well with Story Mode is that each character has a different Story, but...

Lord of the Movie Adaptations

Strengths: Portrays key battles / fights in the movie very well, including the blending of cut-scene to in-game engine. Three locked characters (Faramir, Merry, and Pippin) add replay value.

Weakness: Cut scenes scaled down; lack post production quality (the 'path of the dead' scene looks more like Evil Dead than RotK). Some battles overly difficult (keeping the fellowship alive @ the black gate).

If you liked the movies, you'll probably be able to get at least $15-20 of value from this game. A few of the missions get annoying (running back and forth to shoot down Mumakil & the Nazgul at Pellenor Field, or running around the tower knocking off ladders in Minas Tirith....why can't all the soldiers on the wall push over a freaking ladder?!?), and chances are you'll find yourself starting a...

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King for GameCube

Strengths: fun and easy to play (simple controls), some graphics are very good

Weakness: some graphics are not so good (gandalf strikes me as especially bad), sometimes hard to tell where your character is and which direction they are facing

The graphics for the most part are pretty good when when playing (if you are looking at screenshots, or the in game movies, they don't really look all that great); the environments are detailed, and look very much like they should (similar to movie). The controls are very simple, which make it very easy to play (though the game is fairly difficult at times). The co-op is pretty cool, and it is...
