THQ Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War

Just bought this a few weeks ago. I haven't gotten too deep into this game yet because of work, but I love what I have seen so far. I grew up playing 40K with my friends and I had to have this. Each race has a wide range of unique abilities to master. So many in fact that I have had a hard time using each one before I complete the mission (maybe just do to time constraints). The new camera interface is very cool for a RTS game...you can pan all around and zoom in and out...very cool. Like any new game, it takes a little bit to learn each race and decide wich you like best. Graphics are better than most RTS games that I have purchased. Good point: no more mining for money to purchase units...it is all based on summoning "reinforcements" by taking and holding certain points on the map. The more you have, the faster you gain points for reinforcing your troops. Also, you can reinforce individual squads during battle so they aren't completely decimated. Only problem I see so far with gameplay is the limit of troops you can have at one time. There are upgrades to gain more squads and vehicles, but there is a cap. It is different for each race. My only concern is, like most RTS games, you may get bored after awhile...there is only so much asskicking one can inflict before you have to move on to something else! Overall, this is a cool game. I have waited for a computerized version of WH 40K to come out since I was a kid...I am not disappointed.

THQ Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War

Strengths: Great way to avoid spending $$$ on little lead and plastic miniatures for the table top. Best mix of combat and economic focus I have seen in an RTS style game yet. AWESOME graphics and FX.

Weakness: Single player campaign too short. Needs a convenient map editor as the focus is on the skirmish system. A little overpriced for the play value.

I love this game, don't get me wrong, but it kind of left me holding my breath for expansions and add-on packs... I mean, unless you are totally into on-line RTS skrimishes (Which I am not) then the game is a little thin on substance. I really enjoyed the free demo, and am not dissapointed I purchased the full game, but there are so many other things in the WH40k universe that would be great to incorporate.
I would like to see a mission editor option where you can preset a full army and play it out a little more along the lines of the table top for example. The moders are already going at full pace and I am glad for that... check around and see what is happening with the Tyranids for example.
I have not been able to enjoy the full graphic quality of the game since my video card is old but that is fixable (I need to spend $200 dollars on a new toy next month anyway).
If you are an RTS fan or a WH40K you will NOT be dissapointed, if not wait a while for the price to drop it's still worth having.

THQ Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War

This is one my favorite RTS games I've ever played. The graphics are the best I've ever seen for this genre. You can zoom in and watch battles up close from any angle. Recording skirmishes is made simple and easy. It would be nice if there was an option to rewind it however. The programming seems real tight as I haven't noticed an excessive amount of bugs. I think even the most hardcore RTS person would be satisfied with the vast array of options available to you. You can actually develop somewhat of a style rather than just figure out what way works best for the game.

There are a few other downsides I have towards the game, but none I consider serious. The biggest is that the campaign is too short. Though there are expansions in the works. I would like to see an in-game interface that allows you to configure your keyboard settings how you like them. It could also use a better painter that allows for a little more customization (I just don't understand why the Space Marines have to have two different color knees). I think that modders would like to see the game become more mod friendly. Let's face it, you can only play on the same maps so many times before you become bored with them. The game is fairly new however. There may be many good things to come.

Those said, I would still recommend the game to anyone. I've already enjoyed many hours playing it. If you're considering buying this game and you like RTS, than you shouldn't be disappointed.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War

When I was a bit younger, a ton of my hard earned fast food money got sunk into the world of Warhammer 40k. I can remember heading to my local hobby store and grabbing tons of Space Orks, Space Marines, and just about anything else in the GW universe that I could get my hands on to paint and to play with. Well, here I am … 12 or more years later … and I have craved a good Warhammer title to...

Warhammer 40,000 DawnWar

From the moment the intro cinematic began, I was hooked into Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. It sets the violent and bloody mood and begins a cavalcade of strategy and violence that kept me hooked to the computer for hours and would keep me hooked for more hours were it not for the fact that I have billions of other games to play. It isn't that Dawn of War does anything extraordinarily new or...

Warhammer 40,000 DawnWar

In the Glendale Galleria near my house, there's a Games Workshop store where I occasionally stop in to watch local Warhammer 40,000 players field armies of elaborately painted miniatures. Keep in mind that I've only got a few games of Space Hulk on my resume. Between that and other games such as Dungeons & Dragons and Vampire: The Masquerade that take place mostly inside the player's heads,...
