Strengths: Completely open ended games makes this a blast to play

Weakness: You can only play apprentace level in the 1660 era of the game. Needs to be expanded so you can play all era's of the game in apprentace mode allowing you to do things only apprentaces can do.

I love this game. I have played it from the origanal in the 80's. Great graphics and excellent play and sound make this game really exciting to play.

Extremely well done remake

Strengths: Best computer game I've ever played

Weakness: NONE! (It takes most of your time...)

This game is an excellent remake of one of the best games ever, pirates!.. The entire gameplay is improved, with modern graphics. All the boring stuff from the older game is removed and the user has full control over the faith of the Caribbean..
People say that dancing is hard.. Well it just needs lotsa practicing.. plus you get so much stuff for free by dancing, it makes sense for it to be that tough... Actually swordfighting for higher levels is the impossibly hard part, especially when you are older in the game.
If you are looking for an easy game, well this is it... (I've seen 8yr old kids sinking ships and winning sword battles, having lotsa fun playing the apprentice level)
Also if you are looking for a real gaming challenge, try the swashbuckler level.. It is so brutal, you cannot make a single mistake..
The music throughout the game is also amazing
The only problem I encountered is that the game slows down over time.. could not fix this slowing down problem yet..
One more thing: don't forget to download the patch for the game.. the initial version (1.0) has some minor problems that needs fixing.. Also if you have a laptop, read the readme file, and change your key settings accordingly.. this makes dancing and swordfighting much easier..

Take 2 Interactive Sid Meier's Pirates!

Strengths: Has several different levels of challenge from the sailing around, dueling, dancing and many different quests.

Weakness: The dancing is really impossible if you dont have the number pad from a regular keyboard.

I really enjoy this game. I do wish that it had a little bit more complexity in terms of each career lasting a little longer, however the game makes you retire based on your age. The dancing is the only other complaint I have, if I wasn't able to 10-key I am not sure I would be able to get anywhere with the dancing part. I would definitely purchase this game again.

Sid Meier's Pirates!

Strengths: Fun story and 3-d graphics

Weakness: Some tasks can get monotonous

Raise the jolly roger flag and cruise the seas in serach of plunder and fun! There is quite a variety of tasks and missions in this game, it keeps you coming back for more. There are a lot of ships and upgrades, as well as ship to ship battles, making for a progressive game. Some tasks can get repetitive, but overall an excellent buy!

Sid Meier's Pirates!

Strengths: Open ended game.

Weakness: Dancing is kind of lame.

I love open ended games like this where you do not have to follow a pre-determined storyline. Who has not wanted to be a pirate some time in their lives? Yet another masterpiece by Sid Meier. Thanks Sid!

Take 2 Interactive Sid Meier's Pirates!

Strengths: Everything, great for kids, too!

Weakness: Highly addictive

A great adaptation of the original! Well designed, great graphics and music! I let my 9 year old play and he doesn't even realize that he's learning geography and history as he plays it. Moms: there is no blood, nor killing depicted in this game. There are, however, women in low cut dresses depicted.

Pirates

Strengths: Open ended gameplay, fun pirate simulator, great remake

Weakness: not a lot to do, too easy

Pirates is a fun, open ended, pirate simulator. Great remake of the original game. The game is pretty easy and doesn't have a ton of variety though. I would recommend it to anyone who liked the original or any who is even slightly interested in pirates.

yo ho yo ho a Pirate's Life for Me

Strengths: Good graphics, sound, and addictive gameplay.

Weakness: Can get repetitive... sort of like the Sims in a less mundane way. Travel by sea can be extremely frustrating.

This is a remake of an old 1980s game and is just as addictive as the classic. The CD that I purchased had the 2K games as the publisher and already had the latest version of the game -- no need for patches. The game is relatively easy to learn and its combination of strategy (resource gathering, trading, land battles), role-playing (minor adjustments to character stats, acquiring useful items), and arcade action (cannon duels, swordfighting, dancing, sneaking around) keeps you involved for many hours. The prettier the governor's daughter, the more difficult the dancing (and viewable cleavage) but greater the rewards. The only things that were annoying were sneaking around in a hostile town avoiding guard patrols and traveling in your ship(s) to your desired locations, which is really frustrating and a test of your patience if the random winds (represented by clouds) are not in your favor. Overall, this game is great fun and I definitely recommend it.

I have to disagree

Strengths: Entertaining. Great subject matter and concepts. Some very fun aspects, especially ship nav and battles.

Weakness: Graphics and smooth integration of the various game interfaces/scenarios.

While the game is classic Sid Meier, it is apparent that the game has grown organically over the years. Individual modules are apparent from the town entry menu to all town activities. Battle, sneaking through town, treasure hunting, sword fighting, etc... all play as though in silos. There is little feeling of continuity and this disrupts the feeling of emersion into the game world. In short, while it is great fun, the graphics are far behind the curve for new games. This would be tolerable, because game play is quite addictive, but the price point for the game puts it head to head with the best new games out there.

Unfortunately, Pirates! simply doesn't compete with most new titles despite it's excellent conceptual framework.

great updated game... as good as the original

Strengths: completely open-ended, addictive as anything

Weakness: if you weren't a die-hard fan of the original, it might be possible to become bored over time with some of the repetitive mini-games

Coming from someone who played the first version of the game way back in the day, this is a great updated game. The graphics are nice, and the difficulty level is as easy or hard as you want it to be. The additional mini-game, dancing, is a thoughtful addition to the original ship-to-ship combat, dueling, and town-invading of the original game. Be prepared to waste a vast amount of hours if you get this title.

Sid Meier's Pirates

Aaarrrr! Sit ye down, matey, and grab a pint o rum, and I’ll be telling ya a grand tale of revenge and fortune on the high seas. It began with a family in the Caribbean, about to get free of debt, but it was not to be. The evil city official scuttled their hopes, seized their property and threw the lot into prison. All save for a young man, who escaped their foul clutches and ran off into the...
