True Crime: Streets of L.A.

Strengths: Game Play

Weakness: Lack of innovation

I thought this game was going to be a GTA knock off- but it's really not. There are enough differences to merit a fan of the open ended street patrolling type of game to pick it up.

Some of the controls are a little sluggish and a bit difficult to master- they emply the click down of the left thumbstick to do just about everything- and it gets a little old.

The game is just plain fun. You'll want to try and play as a good cop because it's much harder than being a bad cop- which can be fun at times.

The city model is amazing- it's the next best thing to a virtual model of the city- and it's HUGE! The graphics are decent and the driving model is great.

The best feature in the game is the ability to skip a particularily difficult task. Say you keep failing for one reason or another- the game doesn't become useless because it gives you the option to move ahead in the story and leave the difficult task behind. Every game should do this- then you would never need a cheat. You can even go back and play it later when you get better at something.

Overall- it's worth picking up- and it's not terribly expensive at this point either.

True Crime: Streets of L.A.

Strengths: You should like it if you like GTA, the LA city is pretty well done, the martial arts are cool, the driving is fun, playing as Snoop Dogg is a cool perk

Weakness: Not as much fun as GTA if you like crime instead of being a cop, tries too much at times to be a GTA clone

It's GTA, sort of, though you end up being a cop instead of a criminal. You end up having sort of a "good cop, bad cop" kind of gauge to worry about, which can be fun and a pain at times.

Having 200 square miles of LA to work with is cool, and driving through it is worth just driving around to see it.

Unlocking Snoop Dogg as a playable character looks cool (haven't done it yet), and some of the fighting is pretty good too.

It does try a little hard to follow in GTA's shadow, and for the most part, it does it well enough to be worth picking up.

True Crime: Streets of L.A.

Strengths: Fun at First

Weakness: Everything Else

Game seems really fun at first, but gets EXTREMELY tedious after a couple hours. I would steer clear unless you REALLY like violent street games and want to blow a couple bucks. It won't cost more than that because it's really that bad..

TRUE CRIME

Strengths: GOOD VARIETY IN GAMEPLAY

Weakness: MAIN CHARACTER IS ANNOYING AND IRRITATING

True Crime Streets of L.A. is one of the many grand theft auto clones out there for the X box. It has the same basic gameplay in which you can commandeer random cars driving in the traffic and also has similar themed missions such as follow a suspect in your car without getting too close or reaching a certain destination on the map with a certain time limit. In this game you play as Nick Kang, a loose cannon police officer who wants to do things “his way” as he fights against the Chinese triad and the Russian Mafia. Right away you can dive into the three basic elements of game play for this game. The first is the driving in which the cars control pretty OK,. The shooting sequences are pretty good too and you can even slow down time like in Max Payne. There is also a precise aiming mode so you can target specific parts of your opponent's body to shoot. You can get different types of guns to fight your enemies with, or if you prefer, you can go hand-to-hand against them. The fighting sequences are pretty cool because you fight inside destructible environments in which you can toss your enemies into breakable objects which can do even more damage to them such as burning them or even electrocution. The game sound track is also really good, mostly using West Coast rappers like Snoop Dogg (who you can unlock and play as, in the end of the game), and Warren G. There are also random crimes you can solve like domestic disputes or street fights and can choose to do so as a good cop or a bad cop, with the latter using extreme force and more violence than necessary. There also some stealth missions which adds variety to the game play and also a total of three different endings you can accomplish. Overall , this is a good game and I enjoyed playing it a lot.

True Crime: Streets of LA

Strengths: Graphics, Fun gameplay, Unlockable Snoop Dogg character, Cool cutscenes

Weakness: Lacks polish, Feels like GTA clone but just not as good

True Crime is a pretty good "clone" of the GTA games, except that you play as a cop rather than a gangster. You can choose to be a good cop or bad cop which adds a fun element -- you don't ALWAYS have to do the "right" thing.

The graphics are good, the gameplay is fun except that some of the controls could use some work. I really enjoyed playing as Snoop Dogg for no particular reason, and the cutscenes were cool. But there are lots of little things here and there that are just not up to snuff.

Ultimately this game is not as good as the GTA series but you can pick it up cheap and its a fun addition to your collection.

Truly Bad.

Strengths: You can skip missions, that's about it.

Weakness: Too many to list.

Let's get down to it, True Crime tries to be GTA and Dead to Rights all rolled up into one but fails miserably. The controls and graphics are horrible. There is lots of bad music in the game and you can't select the radio stations like in GTA. The missions can be skipped to speed the story along but the story is not very interesting. If you must play True Crime just skip this one and rent the sequel.

True Crime: Streets of L.A. (Xbox)

Strengths: good graphics, free roaming

Similiar to GTA franchise. You play as an ex-cop. You can fight, shoot, drive and interact with the environment in the recreation of the streets of Los Angeles. There are more than 100 missions to explore.

True Crime

Strengths: Fun gameplay with multiple paths

Weakness: Fighting and aiming systems need more polish

True Crime is Activision's answer to Grand Theft Auto and it turned out to be a fun game. Everything about this game screamed 'B' movie to me, from the voice overs to the situations lead character Nick Kang gets himself into (such as fighting strippers).

One nice touch I loved about this game was how it had alternate story progression scenes depending on your success or failure in the previous mission. It's just a shame Activision didn't spend a little more time working with the fighting and targeting systems. They are far from bad, but lack polish which can lead to some annoying battles.

True Crime: Streets of L.A.

Strengths: Large area of LA faithfully recreated, nice fighting system, custom soundtracks, Snoop Dog is unlockable.

Weakness: Another GTA clone, LA can be boring at times, bad voice acting.

GTA has inspired so many "wannabes" but True Crime is probably one of the best GTA clones on the market. It features a lot of the same elements and plays very similarly. Although it's open ended just like GTA, the side missions and city life aren't as good as they are in GTA. The soundtrack that Activision has provided is quite good with a variety of music; however, the Xbox version of True Crime allows you to rip your own tracks onto the harddrive and play them. The fighting system is fun although it can be plagued by sloppy controls at times. While the map is huge, there's not much going on in the city of LA. I wish Activision would have populated LA with more pizazz. The choice of being a good or bad cop adds an interesting element to the game. If you can't get enough of GTA, then True Crime is probably the closest thing you will find.

True Crime: Streets of L.A.

Strengths: Varied missions, virtual LA in 720p HDTV (!)

Weakness: Not the GTA killer gamers were promised, poor use of Christopher Walken

Any game that features voice acting from Christopher Walken has to be great, right? Not quite.

True Crime has some good things going for it, and it does look better than most other games of this ilk, but ultimately, it didn't entertain me as much as the GTA games did. Maybe it had something to do with the "gangsta rap" vibe (admittedly indicative of LA) or the cumbersome controls and awkward fighting/shooting segments.

Still, there's no denying that True Crime packs in a good amount of gameplay variety and thrills, not to mention great cutscenes. Too bad many of the voice-overs are annoying.
