One of the best console launches and suprisingly...

Strengths: Great graphics processing power, Live intergration with downloadable content/marketplace/online play, Great media center functions, Progressing Backwards Compatability List, Solid Launch Lineup

Weakness: Fans will be a bit louder than other consoles, Expensive ($100 than other console launches), Faceplates hard to get off, Will only load 100 songs list for MP3 Players, Video Streaming requires MCE.

Let me start off by saying I don't believe anyone should get the core system. The core system was introduced in order to funnel off some heat for the $100 price increase for the console in the current generation. By releasing the core system users who bought the real system could feel a sense of value and feel the console's price point was really $299. While I think this tactic is far less shady than the bundling of useless accessories with the PSP, it is nevertheless obviously the real Xbox 360. All the accessories that come with the regular version just spell out next gen (Wireless controllers and HDTV Component Cables). When you hear them talk about the core accommodating to "niche users" they must be talking about people who like to get ripped off or people who couldn't get a regular system at launch and are desperate for a 360.

On first receiving the system you will notice it is quite heavy for the size. For the graphical quality the console has potential for, it's not suprise that the components would be heavy. For the first time in 3D gaming this console has produced some graphics that are on Par with current Gen PC Gaming. I find this to be quite impressive for $400 which is quite a comparable price. And with many popular PC titles being ported on the 360 (Call of Duty 2 and Oblivion for example), it's not a bad alternative for people sick of upgrading their PCs every year, though personally I would not give up my Keyboard and mouse for FPS' like Quake 4. The console runs relatively hot so the fans are quite loud for a console according to many people. I personally have it running in the same room as my PC so my PC's fans are definitely louder and drown out any of the sound. One of the major feats with this console is that all the games will support 720p. For any HDTV owners this is a godsend. In the previous generation there were only a handful of titles that ever got the 720p treatment. Personally having a 1080p HDTV, this made me quite disappointed. But with the 360 I no longer have to worry about that. I think going with 720p was a good move since 1080p sets are rare. The visual quality jump from 480p to 720p is amazing.

The main thing that struck me instantly while using this console initially is that they really designed this console for useability and Xbox Live. The intergration of every game into xbox live is quite interesting. Sometimes while waiting for a game to start in the multiplayer lobby I'll check out people's games list and achievements (which the console automatically tracks if you're online). Also I can pull up the dash blade any time I want. This allows for me to insert my own personal soundtrack whenever I want to any game. For example in PGR3 I can just plug in my Ipod and load up my songs and race with my own playlist from my Ipod. Also an alternative is connecting the 360 to your home network and loading up the songs for a shared folder on your PC. Either way it all works flawlessly except for the fact that they left out any sort of alphabetical sorting tabs. Therefore browsing through a long list of playlists/albums/artists can be quite annoying. Also you can stream pictures off your computer for instant access for photo viewing on your home TV from your computer. The console delivers on all the promises of being an entertainment hub for your home network. Unfortunately for me this aspect is not as important since my PC and my 360 are connected to the same HDTV LCD Monitor. However for people with their PC in the computer room and the HDTV in the living room, it provides a very affordable alternative to having another HTPC in the living room. With MCE you can stream HDTV Video directly off your PC to the living room which is very convenient.

As for the launch lineup, I have found it to be one of the most solid in history. So far I own 3 games (Kameo, Project Gotham 3, and Perfect Dark Zero) and all are superb. I could go into detail about each of them but needless to say they all look fantastic and deserve well above a 8.5 Score out of 10. Also with NBA 2K5 sports fans have a game that looks fantastic. some of the visuals in that game will blow you away.

The current estimate is that Microsoft is losing more than $100 off each console sold, and all the features and graphical capabilities you receive from the console is a clear indication of why. There have been some complaints about defective units, but that is not all uncommon with launches. In fact mine has been running quite well with no real crashes, though I have encountered one bug in PGR3. I know it is a popular trend to go against Microsoft, but it's very hard to deny that they have created a well thought out console sooner than anyone could have anticipated. With a good lead of at least 6 months before the other next-gen consoles there is no reason not to be somewhat impressed with the 360. I would strongly recommend this product to open minded gamers, especially if they have an HDTV.

sort of a colloquial review - you could be more concise. I think most people agree the core system is a rip off. I think for the most part you're wrong about the weight - it comes from the drives and the coolers, not the chips. You make a point of $400 being impressive, but most people have to get theirs through ebay now for around $600 to $900, and then you pay for xbox live and expensive games (Microsoft takes a $10 royalty on each). If you own a computer, why are you amazed by 1280x720? I understand it's a lot better than 480 though. Media sharing just doesn't impress me from a technology standpoint, but I suppose it is a good point. However saying that it will be an "entertainment hub" is wrong. Microsoft didn't want to kill MCE, so they didn't even include WMVHD playback on the xbox, which was a big mistake. I certainly wouldn't call the lineup the most solid in history - if I had one, until Oblivion came out, I'd probably be playing only Call of Duty and Halo 2. I have heard similar loss figures but that they will definitely make it up with all of the money you spend on xbox live. personally I don't think going with microsoft constitutes being "open minded". Most people use Microsoft products whether they like it or not.

you're entitled to your opinion, this is coming from my personal experiences. As for a media hub you try to claim it as some sort of gimped system which is not true. The 360 basically acts as a media extender. And with certain plugins you can use it as a web browser as well. The 360 is a supplement to the Media Center PC and was never meant to be a replacement. As for the games, i'm still having a blast with the inherently flawed Perfect Dark Zero. As a matter in fact I have not even had enough time to finish through all the launch titles i've purchased and come March (GRAW, Oblivion) when more games come out, I still probably won't be done. As for Call of Duty 2, I don't have that game since I passed it on the PC already. However it runs much more smoothly at 1280x720 than my decent PC does. The most rediculous argument you make is on the scarcity of the 360. If people are gullible enough to pay over MSRP for the console that is thier own fault. I personally had no problem obtaining a 360 and at $400 you could not build a PC that can provide an equivalent gaming experience in terms of graphics power. You seem to be in a very PC centric mindset but as far as i'm concerned my PC and 360 both compliment each other. I'll play my Quake 4 and other competitive FPS on the PC. However for games like 99 nights, DOA4, etc those are games made for console and just wouldn't work on the PC. Anyone who is open minded would find it hard to find the 360 as a total failure. From your tone it's obvious you have an intense anti-microsoft mentality. As far as I'm concerned companies exist solely to make money and fanboy gamers are the ones who try to change everything into villans and heroes. MS has put out a quality product with the 360 and i'm not going to say it sucks just because MS makes it. Hence open minded thinking =p

gatoatigrado: The xbox 360 is a pretty good deal for the price considering you would have to invest a lot more to get the same power with a PC. Video cards aren't cheap.

like im gonna read all that lol but i read the first part and i agree that of you buy the core system then your gettin ripped off because it doesnt include a hard drive or whatever it is and you have to go out and buy it and then it costs more than just buying the $399 ones..thats marketing for ya

I don't completely agree with it being a total ripoff to buy the core system. I did the math a while ago (don't feel like doing it again) and you basically save $100 buying the decked-out system instead of the core system and then everything else seperately.

Besides, I'm annoyed that people are so willing to accept such a huge base price increase! I expect consoles to cost $200 brand new, maybe $250. This $300 crap for the "gimped" version pisses me off!

I think saving $100 extra is a good deal. Just a memory card on the core system costs $39.99 already! And who wants to play with a wired controller these days? We are talking about Next Gen here! That means high def and other features. The prices are pretty expensive, but if you can't afford it, you can probably wait til Nintendo Revolution and PS3 come out. Microsoft will probably drop the prices at that time to compete.

thanks for replying. i don't think that my review was anti-microsoft, i think it was realistic. i got an xbox 360 and i do really enjoy ghost recon and oblivion. "The 360 basically acts as a media extender". That's what i was saying - it will not play wmvhd (at least with drm or any sort of decent controls such as rewind or fast forward). it's not going to be any competition if Sony's blue ray is close to what is promised. i would appreciate you showing me the browser plugins - i am guessing it's not quite firefox or ie7 and without a keyboard it might be hard, but i still like to see tricks people have been able to do. if you have a plugin for a keyboard and mouse i would really like it. i purchased the console for $400 from best buy in 15 seconds, and the deal actually lasted a few hours. otherwise, i think i made a good point, but there will be more in stock. i think i covered the graphics pretty completely in my review. it is not posted yet, perhaps they have to look at it before they will allow it to be posted.

the xbox 360 is more of a manufacturing and value advantage than anything that is revolutionary or intreuging. microsoft has put together a system that has a nice interface and some new features, but it seems to me like a needed graphics update from the first xbox. i suppose i don't see why you are calling yourself "open minded" for not discrediting a good product. i think people dislike Microsoft because it is closed source and as with all companies pursuing profits. is it close minded to not purchase a product because you don't like the policies of the corporation? i agree there is a lot of "xbox stinks" and "playstation 3 stinks" and all that other social trash but that's just the effect of stupidity, not that one person is open minded because they have chosen to take the xbox side. open minded to me is people who will try new things, perhaps similar to linux on the playstation 3, but it just seems awkward with "gamers" or entertainment, as these things usually uphold american stereotypes and culture.

Ok, I thought I should update my review with some issues on the system.

My console first broke down last year around the same time. I got a replacement from Microsoft (after learning just about every launch 360 is defective). However today Console #2 (the replacement one) just broken down. So now I'm going to have to ship it back and get another replacement. This will be Xbox 360 #3. This is pretty bad reliability for a console (probably one of the worst). I recommend strongly that if you have a 360 that you consider getting an extended warranty since microsoft makes you pay $140 if it's out of warranty and extended warranty is only $30 I believe. And yes my console has always been kept in a well ventilated area. It's a real pity that such a good console is suffering from so many hardware failures. If your 360 is starting to crash that is a good sign that the 3 red lights are coming soon.

So close to perfect...

Strengths: Awesome graphics, sexy & sleek, customizable faceplates, superb online network, wireless controllers

Weakness: External *brick* power supply, gets a little hot & sometimes noisy, no HDMI output (only Elite)

So close to perfect...

I've had the Xbox 360 for about 10 months now. Last month it gave up on me & I had to get it replaced, for which I had to incurr a one way shipping cost but the replacement process was a breeze & the replacement Xbox 360 was with me in no time.
I had the original Xbox for a very long time, now passed it on to my brother who doesn't require *next-gen* gaming for his day to day life, however I do recommend it for everyone else. The Xbox 360 takes entertainment to another level by giving you wireless controllers, a better interface to interact with (the Xbox 360 dashboard), jaw dropping graphics & a whole lot more..I'm not going to bore you with the technical specifications of the console, I will point out the few things you might be wanting to get a feedback about.

What makes the Xbox 360 awesome (Pros)?

The graphics are way too good to be described by any sort of words. Yes, if you want to take advantage of the true HD experience you will need a decent HDTV which keep getting cheaper by the day. The graphics do vary from TV to TV but in general with a HDTV you will not be disappointed at all.
The HDD allows you to save a lot of content including downloaded content, music you rip from cds etc. The main reason of the hard drive existing is to allow you to save your game files & with a 20GB HDD (only 12GB is available to the user) you can store an unlimited amount of saved games, mind it, you do need the HDD to play original Xbox games.
The wireless controller creates freedom beyond what can be imagined. Using 2.4GHz technology the responsiveness of the Xbox 360s controller is nothing but instant giving you the perfect lag-free gaming experience.
The Xbox Live Network System is optional but I strongly recommend it for anyone who has got a broadband connection. It will complete the entertainment experience you are looking for. Online content availability is increasing rapidly. You can download game content, game demos, gametrailers in HD, movie trailers in HD, music videos...the list is endless.
The availability of games will get you confused on what to choose & keep you busy with the Xbox 360 all the time. The number of games available keeps increasing & currently the Xbox 360 has almost 5 times the number of games available on its competition - the PlayStation 3.
The Xbox 360 can be linked up with your computer to stream music, videos & pictures. The setup for this barely takes a minture. All games allow the option of using custom soundtracks, this is where streaming music can be very useful.
If you feel the need of watching your movies in HD (HD movies are different from normal DVDs) then you can buy the external HD-DVD Player add-on for the Xbox 360 ($200).

What's not-good about the Xbox 360 (Cons)?

The Xbox 360 is not by itself, you have this *brick* power supply which is bulky & annoying as the mobility of the console is lost with this. The component cables can make it a little untidy & can cause a little bit of a clutter. There is no HDMI output for the premium system (the Elite has this). The machine can be noisy at times & produces a lot of heat, you have to make sure it is in a well ventilated area, the power supply should be in a well ventilated area as well.

Comparison with the PlayStation 3.....

Which is more powerful in terms of specifications?
On paper, the PS3 but which is being

Which is being used to its utmost potential currently & delivering what it promised?
The Xbox 360 for the main reason that the developers have found too many bugs in the PS3s developing software & are finding it hard to understand & learn the PS3s developing software.

What's the exclusive content on both (from the top of my head)?
Xbox 360: Gears of War/Halo/Project Gotham Racing/Forza Motorsport/GTA IV/Perfect Dark Zero
PS3: Resistance Fall of Man/Gran Turismo/Formula One/Metal Gear Solid/Motorstorm

What's the number in game titles currently in the market?
The PS3 is told to have less than 40 games currently available in the market where as the Xbox 360 has 150+ titles available.

Which one has the better online network?
The Xbox 360 with its Xbox Live Online Multiplayer Network is by far better than what Sony came up with, you might be paying $50/year for it but it is well worth it. The latest dashboard update allows you to IM with your friends as well.

Which is better?
Nothing can be taken away from either of them, they are both very powerful machines. However, for a person looking for a *pure entertainment* system I would recoemmend the Xbox 360 because it has a lot more titles available & will never be far behind the PS3 in terms of graphics or performance (currently it is ahead), allows you to easily connect to your computer to stream music, pictures & videos, the Xbox Live Network allows you to download a lot of content for games & other media - such as gametrailers in HD, demos, new themes etc. plus the lack of force feedback with the PS3 leaves the next-gen experience incomplete which is not the case with the Xbox 360.

Why would you need an HDTV if there is no way to attach the console to it, e.g. HDMI cable??!!

Reply by member: manu08
Apr 8, 2009

you can still connect it via the component cable.. it's not quite as good as hdmi nonetheless it is extremely good. the new xbox 360s being sold now have an hdmi port anyway so don't even worry about that unless your buying an older second hand or refurbished model.

Xbox 360 Premium (component version)

Strengths: Large game library available, good controller feel, nice interface, great online community.

Weakness: Huge power brick, loud, overheats easily.

Even though I'm a fairly hardcore gamer, I'd say this console has definitely not won many points with me since I've owned it (or, maybe, it's pwned me?!?!).

I love the huge library of games, the integration with games with the well-thought-out online community (Xbox Live!), and the feel of the controllers.

I hate the heating issues with this thing, though. I'm currently on my 2nd XB360 (I sent the first back to Microsoft for repairs within the 1st year...typical for this console) and am probably going to end up sending back this one for more repairs. Frankly, I'm torked that M$ would allow something with this level of build quality (and the amount of $ it cost me) to get into consumers' hands and not replace it with a working console (it's widely known that most folks have had to have their XB360 replaced at least once).

The sad thing: I can't stay away. The mix of games and online community via Xbox Live! is too compelling to make me throw this thing out alltogether. So, I'll suffer Microsoft's apparent lack of care for their consumer base and keep playing my ExBox.

What are you thinking?

Strengths: awesome graphics (esp. on a hdtv, but still great on a sdtv), great games, friendly controller, 5.1 sound if you have a home theater, the list goes on and on

Weakness: big power supply, the plastic casing is a little more fragile than I'd like, some of the better xbox games aren't compatable, you need a hdtv to really get the point

I've had my 360 since December, and in that time, I haven't once regretted buying it. I won't be one of the people that lies and says that there are no problems, but those problems are few, and the system more than makes up for them. The 360 was my jump from Sony to Microsoft, and I still haven't decided if I'm looking back. With a set price of $599 for the premium system, I'm not sure if the PS3 is worth taking out a loan. However, I do have one bit of advice, and because of that, I doubt anyone will be reading this... DON'T PAY $600 FOR A REFURB 360. THAT IS ABSOLUTELY STUPID. GO TO WALMART, BEST BUY, CIRCUIT CITY, ECT. AND BUY A BRAND NEW, NEVER OPENED, NEVER PLAYED 360 FOR $399.

super playing machine

Strengths: the graphics are unbeliveable real. The gamplay is gripping and you cant stop playing. The xbox 360 is like a drug that you cant stop playing.I would definatly recomened this outstanding prouduct.

Weakness: the wireless controlers are not as good as they were cracked up to be(they need batteries which run out)is usless . The biggest issue is the price! I brought my one for 210 pounds . Alot of money.

fantasticly amazing, fast, loud and higly enjoyable. Twise as good as the ps3 will ever be. Definatly worth my money.
Never will there be a better concel (unless the next xbox).

Weakness: price

this thing is very good. Everyone is afraid of how microsoft's 1.0 versions always have bugs, well i have had mine since the second day it cme out and i have noticed nothing of the sort. The controllers are great. The package with the hard drive and the wireless controllers is a better way to go. All in all this is a great product which completely destroys what the PS3 has to offer. PS3's liquid crystal hard-drive completely failed them so they have to use diiferent technology now. Xbox might of won this one.

Are you serious?? I love xbox, but to say it destroys what PS3 has to offer is a huge overstatement. There isn't one single review on the net or on television where the experts aren't saying that the PS3 has the best hardware. Do you think letting microsoft out the gate first was a slip on sony's part? They were just waiting do see what they had and how their launch would go. The PS3 will outsell the 360 3 to 1 just as PS2 did to xbox 1.

yes i agree with the others...the ps3 should theoretically have more power. the "unified shader architecture" is already being overcome by today's best pc graphics cards (as all consoles eventually fall to pc's, but not in value). The cell architecture is amazing, and even the military is going to use it for mobile supercomputers (they will run at 200 teraflops and be "the size of a toaster"). It all depends on how much of this xdr and cell and other top-notch hardware sony can give without getting too much into debt. the 360 has fallen short on wireless (they wanted 802.11g) and better hard drives, and most importantly hd-dvd. Even though Gates' vision of downloading movies is really awesome, i can't see my dsl provider getting much faster any time soon.

best console currently

Strengths: great graphics for a great price

Weakness: it's a console, playstation 3 will be better, for a computer person, the console's "next gen" is nothing revolutionary

The xbox 360 was my first console, and from reading a lot about it, I think the system completely met my expectations. I certainly wouldn't be saying this if I bought it earlier than Ghost Recon and Oblivion, but the wait was worth it.

I have heard that the graphics compare with the radeon x1800 and that's probably pretty accurate, as people have gotten pc versions of these games to run on comparable systems. It's true that the top sli system from nvidia (7900 xt) is a factor of 1.8 times the processing power, but only the graphics cards will cost you three times the console. Although the powerpc is not new like the cell, it is good technology (core duo's not as much faster as apple would like), and this was actually the most drastic change from the original xbox, according to Microsoft it's speed is a factor of 52, and programmers probably have not fully utilized it yet.

The games were really amazing. I was a bit alienated by using a controller, but it gives you a lot of magnetism (you don't have to aim right at enemies) even in hard mode, and was much nicer than I expected. However I still prefer the mouse, and ghost recon would be pointless without the magnetism, and slightly unrealistic enemy response times. Also it's extremely annoying not to be able to move at variable speeds with any sort of scope. I haven't played Oblivion as much but what I have seen is amazing. The outdoors slow down a bit (20-30 fps) simply because there's so much, which is evidence that the xbox 360's graphics power is indeed limited, but it was still a nice experience.

The built in antialiasing and procedural texture functions add nice effects, but there are obvious sampling problems, and ghost recon and oblivion's shadowing really was not outstanding. If sony can offer anything close to the trailers for metal gear and the supposedly fake killzone trailer, they will certainly win in terms of graphics, and I'm sure sony's games will be good as well.

The xbox live is obviously Microsoft's way to make money for those not buying accessories. The price isn't bad but it is rather limited. I really was least impressed with the windows media playback. Microsoft was going to have wmvhd playback, and indeed it can play high resolution files but the player is awful - it can only pause and stop, and there is no support for any of the dvds that are out (most of which are imax now). Obviously the xbox 360 wasn't really intended to beat sony's new high definition battle, and though video games are often a better enterprise than videos, especially at $60 a game, but the disc royalties would have been profitable.

I suppose for previous console gamers will appreciate "hd" but it is nothing new for me. Windows Vista's DirectX 10 will bring standardized occlusion testing and point sprite acceleration, and something called "geometry shaders". They're a good idea (being able to edit vertices and save with only the card) but still limited to built in triangle rasterizing. Microsoft says for now that the directx 9 sdk is similar to xbox development kit, therefore I think it will again end up loosing to the computer, especially when advanced shaders come out utilizing this important new feature.

worst of all is the fact there is no linux yet or any time soon. I am not ripping apart my console to help a development effort (www.free60.org...) that will probably take a very long time. Microsoft is afraid that the xbox will hurt its windows sales according to some articles I have read. They also mention the connectivity and stand alone playback is again an attempt to defend Windows sales. I think if the Sony Playstation 3 turns out to be at least close to what it has promised, Microsoft will again be fighting as the secondary manufacturer, and probably disrupting its rather integrated interface to try and compete with Sony's features.

Other notes - "multiple dvds" is pretty unrealistic because of procedural texture generation. The ability to interrupt games I believe is pretty new for a console, and certainly very useful. The controller is shaped well, and the system doesn't look outlandish (a very good thing). It's nice to get a bundle instead of buying rip off accessories. You will need an optical connection if you want 5.1 sound. The console will get noisy after a few minutes, but this is expected. The optical drive is relatively fast. The system will take 7 gb from your hard drive so don't expect to store movies. You cannot do anything while you download.

correction - it does have point sprite graphics card powered acceleration. As far as I know though it's still not DirectX 10. the halo 3 trailer looked really nice; anyone who hasn't seen it should go over to Bungie's website and download it (high definition).

I'm probably getting a ps3 also if I can afford it; compared to computers it's a great price. A linux machine powered by 7 cell processors, 3.2 ghz memory, and usable hard drive space, with x11 tunneled using a secure vpn; sounds nice. This close to the launch and Sony is still confirming linux support. that's very awesome.

XBOX 360 a lot better product, with outstanding HD...

Strengths: Graphics, speed, interface, flexibility, sleek design. Microsoft's willingness to work with the end users to assure continued enjoyment.

Weakness: Number of games and price of the new games

The product met and exceeded my expectations. The graphics and the attention to detail is outstanding. The interface has been streamlined, setting up and making changes is a breeze. The speed of loading games and response time has vastly improved, the players using internet gaming will love the response time.
Overall excellent product, the price will come down when competetors have their products launched.

Xbox 360 Gaming Console

Strengths: 720p, xbox live

Weakness: can lock up (get intercooler fan!)

Overall a very good product, and at the price point PS3 is coming into the market this was a no-brainer especially since I really only play sports + GTA games.

Xbox 360 Gaming Console

Strengths: The xbox 360 has great capabilities

Weakness: It does not work all the time and we need to get warranty taken care of.

When you buy something new that needs to have warranty work, it is hard to do because we don't know where to take it to, because we don't know where it was originally purchased. It is difficult even though the x box 360 was never even opened by the seller.

Awesome

Strengths: it has the best graphics money can buy and is the ultimate gaming device

Weakness: there are none

This system was the best $400 dollars I have spent in my life. The video games for it are as amazing as the 360 itself. Its game are as realistic as life can get

I'm not saying the graphics are bad, or that they are good, but nothing can beat computer graphics. No, I'm not talking about a 16 inch monitor, I'm talking about a top of the line custom computer, hooked up to a 32 inch hi-def flatscreen tvl; nothing, NOTHING can beat those graphics.

I Expected More!

Strengths: Better graphics than the original xbox. Every game is in HD. More than a just a gaming system with it's media center capabilities.

Weakness: Current game list doesn't utilize the xbox 360's abilities, so the graphics don't appear to be drastically better than the original xbox. It's not fully backwards compatible.

The xbox 360 is slightly disappointing to me, the graphics are only slightly better than on the original console, I already own a few HD games for the original xbox and the graphic improvements of the 360 are even less noticeable in those games (the jaggies are slightly less apparent). I can't wait to buy a game that really puts the xbox 360's hardware to task to see what it can really do.
A huge plus is that the xbox 360 adds a bunch of new functions with xbox live and connectivity options so it functions more as a media hub, which I'm just starting to explore, in this case it resembles a multimedia computer more so than a gaming system.
To sum it up, it's a good system (not great, but good), I just expected a little more of a jump (as far as graphics go) between the orginal and the 360.

You will think its a waste of money but it is not. This system is one of the best with all of the features it has to offer. Some people think that $400 dollars is a waste of money but you have to think of it like in a investment because this is one of the newest system on the market.

Horrible

Strengths: None

Weakness: Heat, Slow Due to 512 mb ram, unimpressive ATI Video processor.

It Locks up in upright position and runs slower when laying down. My computer loads oblivion faster and is only single core 3ghz processor. Graphics are better than my computer but I don't have a very high end card. Good for money but nothing compared to full computer.

video processor is "unimpressive" but better than your computer? 2/5 for being "good for money" sounds like a rating to try and swing what others have written.

How does 512mb slow it down? Are you thinking your 1gb on your computer makes it faster??? You need to look at some benchmarks then; ram is good for multitasking and video processing, but without texture compression

(256*256 + 128*128 ...) = 87381 (pixels / texture)
(8bits * r/g/b/a) = 32 bits = 4 bytes (color per pixel)

If all the ram were for textures, that would be 1460, otherwise still it would seem like it is plenty. I think Halo 1 used uncompressed map files, and whole levels were around 150 mb. Furthermore, there's a lot of graphics techniques for doing these things on the fly, as well as texture compression; regular photos seem to be less than 100k for a 512x512. Look at the process monitor next time you play a well designed game; I know quite a few that only take up about 200 (I have 1gb available).

You also seem to think your processor speed makes load times faster. As far as i know this is your hard drive; if the xbox had hard drive game installation then it would probably be a hacking problem, with rentals and other things.

This guy's review is completely misleading. My PC is a 3.2 GHz P4 w/ Hyperthreading and I have a GEforce 6800 Overclocked And 1Gig Of ram. Suprise Oblivion is still pretty much unplayable on my PC.... You need a much more expensive card to get to the level that oblivion plays on the 360 and probably a 500 dollar card to get better graphics. Oblivion on 360 is not flawless. Load times are longer on the 360 (the only legit comment he made) But at least I can play the game. They really need to patch oblivion since load times can get pretty bad as the cache gets fragmented. However when reviewing this console the guy is completely clueless. I mean come on, runs faster when upright?!....

Reply by member: zoglog
May 1, 2006

oh yeah, oblivion's framerates dip pretty low on the 360 when you're outside and loading is frequent which is annoying. Still better than playing it on my PC, and the sumof my pc parts is still more expensive than a 360 anyway.

OK, i think this conversation is out of date, because the price on the 360 is like way overpriced for now, but still, i have a 360, the premium one, and have oblivion and gears of war, i think the load time is reasonable for a console, i mean its slow, but come on , you cant expect a console to give you that much, and what the hell are you talking about "the load time is slower when its on itsside, or whatever you said, )get a brain dude, 360 rocks, if you don't like it , sell it on...

rare and expinsive

Strengths: great graphics, some nice features, wireless controlers that work properly

Weakness: limitations, expinsive, rare, accesiories are to expinsive, sub par launch titles, no nextgen optical drive (hddvd), many are defective

These are difficult to find, and when you do find one the price will be gouged to sometimes hundreds more than what you should be paying for it at the local wal-mart. I bought mine used from a gaming place that closed down. I haven't had any problems such as over heating and lockups with mine so far. Trust me on that one; I haven’t seen the light of day in a while. A buddy of mine who bought his 360 new from the store has been having problems with it locking up about every 15min. The graphics are excellent and wireless controllers work surprisingly well. The accessories are way over priced. By the time you get done buying all of the stuff to make it worth playing and buying the proper cable to hook it into your high end system your pockets will only contain a small amount of lint where after you will sell the lint on eBay stating that the lint was blessed by the pope so that you can buy some juice for these thirsty wireless controllers. Even though the play and charge accessory is expensive for what you get it is well worth it if you play often. The main reason I bought the 360 is for one to say that I own a 360 (cuz you know how the ladies go crazy for rare nextgen systems) and two to play PGR3. I was a huge fan of PGR2 and now am a huge fan of PGR3 but that is another review. The dash board limitations are very noticeable. I would love to be able to copy my mp3 files off the pen drive to the hard drive that way I could plug in 3 out of the 4 controllers but for some reason it wants me to burn my music to a CD and then rip them to the hard drive and then type in all the song names by hand. Who does this device think it is? Doesn’t the burning the CD then ripping it to the xbox hd and typing in all the song names accomplish the same thing as being able to copy directly from a pen drive? Who knows what they where thinking when they put in that limitation. Why are there only 3 USB ports on it anyway? What if I have 3 wired controllers, one wireless and would like to be able to use the USB network adapter and play music from my portable device? What if I am afraid “they” are tapping into my wireless controllers to figure out my secret move so I would like to use 4 wired controllers so all of my paranoid friends can play? Guess these questions weren’t ever asked while the console was in testing or did any testing ever take place? Apparently not according to my friend who’s brand new xbox 360 locks up every 15 mins. Why do these new memory cards cost twice as much as the old ones? Why can’t I use a pen drive as a memory unit? The list goes on but right now I am outa time.

However for people with their PC in the computer room and the HDTV in the living room, it provides a very affordable alte

The best system out !!!!

Strengths: The Marketplace

Weakness: not being able to play all xbox games yet!!

Well it's the best system out right now, the graphics look great, I like the wireless control, and being able to download demo's before buying the games is one of the best things they added to xbox live. The system is alot more than I thought so much you can do with it, If you have a Windows Media Center Pc even better, I can play shows I have recorded on my pc and any cd's I have on my pc thought the xbox360, but just one thing I was not happy about is that you can't play all the xbox games, and it even some of the new games like Star Wars Battlefront II.

Great system

Strengths: XBL, Games library, HD gaming (1080p), Online marketplace has great stuff ;)

Weakness: the 33% failure rates (well I am not one of them w00t falcon chip), Accesories cost a fortune, you don't get much for your money vs. the dollar per dollar profit on a ps3.

Well aside from the failure rates, I am a happy camper. love the games and fun with multiplayer in XBL. Only strong point against ps3 because psn has bad integrity but sill love both systems.

Living with Xbox 360 for a week...FYI

Strengths: + The best visual graphics/sound/Gaming experience out there… + wireless controllers rock! + Great games support + Very responsive GUI/Hardware, well designed, highly customizable + Good quality D

Weakness: - expensive (esp accessories) - Still too noisy for the living room - somewhat restricted hard drive capablities, USB port usage, generic memories, cables support - game loading time needs some i

Am I satisfied?? Yes! But I wish microsoft woulfd fix some of the negetives I have pointed out

cant think of a reason why I might need a VIIV PC in my living room rather than an XBOX 360 (VIIV PC in the closet would be perfect..which is exactly where I have my media center PC:)

Strengths: Works. All pieces included. Arrived early(to fedex' credit). Shipping was free.

Weakness: Not quite in like new condition, a little dirty, nothing permanent looking though, and it didnt red ring of death right outta the box.... wait thats not a weakness. :(

Overall, I am very pleased with the order, I was scared due to reading some of the bad comments after placing the order, but luckily mine isn't one of them. Even if the system fails after a week or so, it is still under MS warranty so I'm not sweating... just enjoying my new excuse to wake up more than 20 minutes before work. :)

Xbox 360 Premium System

Strengths: Pretty good graphics for a console.

Weakness: Need to buy the Elite version for an HDMI video connection. (some TVs can't support 1080p on component connections)

Still the best console out there for the money. The XBox 360 has tons of games. Pretty good graphics for a console and is reasonably priced. Parents don't have to take out a second mortgage to help Santa at Christmas time :)
One of my favorite features of the XBox 360 is the wireless controllers, and being a Vista Media Center Extender is also a big added bonus.

Xbox 360 Gaming Console

Strengths: Excellent machine for the price. Has the most highly rated games on the market compared to the other next gen systems.

Weakness: eventually, this system will cost you money! to utilize this thing's full potential you'll need money to download extras, games, and pay for the online gaming service. Generates lots of heat.

Amazing graphics, easy to use interface, great arcade games for download, and best games on the market so far. good legacy of online community. only drawbacks is the cost of accessories, services, and online content/games.

X-Box 360 - Good with some major flaws.

Strengths: Great games! Has a great user interface and the ability to play you own songs from an USB device or the hard drive if you have it is great. Also like the controllers now.

Weakness: Has very high fail rate. Mine failed within 3 weeks. But the system I purchased was pre-owned and was advertised as new so this may have been the reason it lasted such a short amount of time.

Overall a good system if you get one that works without having to send it in to get repaired. The games that are being developed for it are outstanding and there's plenty to choose from no matter your preference you'll definitely find ones you'll love.
