ARX FATALIS IS A FREE ROAMING ROLE-PLAYING GAME THAT IS SIMILAR TO "THE ELDER SCROLLS: MORROWIND GAME OF THE YEAR". YOU ARE AN INDIVIDUAL NAMED AM SHAEGAR WHO STARTS AS A PRISONER IN THE UNDERGROUND WORLD OF ARX. YOU WILL EVENTUALLY ESCAPE FROM YOUR CAPTORS AND WILL THEN HAVE FREE ACCESS TO FULLY EXPLORE THE VAST UNDERGROUND CAVES. THE BASIC STORY IS THAT THE EARTH'S SUN IS NOW GONE AND ALL OF THE LANDS ABOVE ARE NOW BURIED UNDER TONS OF SNOW AND IS NOW ALL BUT UNINHABITABLE. ALL OF THE LIVING CREATURES AND RACES, BOTH HUMANS, ELVES, GOBLINS, AND VARIOUS OTHER LIVING THINGS HAVE BEEN FORCED UNDERGROUND. THIS GAME IS FUN IN THAT YOU CAN DECIDE WHAT KIND OF PLAYER YOU CHOOSE YOUR CHARACTER TO BE. YOU CAN BECOME A SNEAKY AND SILENT THIEF AND SPEND YOUR ATTRIBUTE POINTS BEEFING UP YOUR SNEAK SKILLS. THE ADVANTAGE IS THAT YOU CAN OPEN ALMOST ANY DOORS WITHOUT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT FINDING KEYS. THIS MEANS YOU CAN GET LOTS OF FREE STUFF AND SAVE YOUR PRECIOUS GOLD FOR MORE IMPORTANT THINGS. YOU ARE ABLE TO ALSO CAST VARIOUS SPELLS, USING THE DIRECTIONAL PAD TO TRACE MAGIC PATTERNS IN THE AIR TO CAST THE SPELL. MY ONE COMPLAINT OF THIS GAME IS THAT THE GRAPHICS AND CHARACTER MODELS ARE BLOCKY AND THE GAME IS TOO DARK AT TIMES, BECAUSE OF ITS UNDERGROUND SETTING. ALSO, IT CAN GET TOO LABOR INTENSIVE WITH YOUR CHARACTER; JUST LIKE IN MORROWIND , YOU HAVE TO WORRY NOT ONLY ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER'S HEALTH AND INJURIES, BUT YOU ALSO HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT FINDING FOOD TO SUSTAIN YOUR DAY TO DAY HEALTH. THE VOICE ACTING IS TOP NOTCH, WITH THE CHARACTERS SOUNDING AS YOU WOULD IMAGINE THEM TO. GOBLINS SPEAK IN GUTTURAL , MONOSYLLABIC TONES, JUST LIKE THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO. OVERALL, THIS GAME IS PRETTY GOOD BUT NOT AS GOOD AS MORROWIND, BECAUSE YOU'RE PRETTY MUCH STUCK EXPLORING THE SAME LOOKING UNDERGROUND CAVES AND LOCATIONS. BUT OVERALL, STILL A GOOD GAME.

I liked this game a lot at first. It is a complete and utter dungeon crawler in every sense of the word. It reminded me a lot of Ultima Underworld for the PC, but with better graphics and on Xbox. It was a lot of fun, until I got farther into it and it was just the same thing over and over with different people and groups. It's worth $10 or $15 though.
Arx Fatalis is one of those games where for every step forward, it takes two steps backwards. Much like the acclaimed Morrowind, Arx is a first-person RPG that possesses a heavy western feel--think Dungeons and Dragons, and you've already got a good idea of what this is going to be like. The gameplay is solid enough, with lots of skills to upgrade and items to collect... the main problems are weak graphics, a clunky combat system, and average music. Also, the game is horribly drab, as 99% of the game is spent underground--no sky or clouds or pretty rivers... just one cave after the next. Good for the die-hards who have finished Morrowind.
Strengths: Great storyline, nice mission-based design, interesting controls for magic and combat
Weakness: Music, sound effects and graphics are only so-so
First-person RPG action comes to the XBox in Arx Fatalis.
The world of Arx Fatalis is one shrouded in darkness, with everyone living underground. Starting out in a cell, the story slowly evolves through a great deal of mission-based episodes.
The combat system is done in first-person, like a FPS. The magic system is gesture-driven, where spells are cast though the work of making the gestures that cast them, and if it's done wrong, the spell doesn't work. The atrribute system works well to allow differing types of characters.
The graphics, sound and music don't live up to the XBox potential, though it's a minor complaint, and the gameplay and storyline do well to make up the deficiency.
Overall, it's a very well done RPG title, and one any RPG fan should look at without reservation.

Some games are over-hyped, others receive far less credit than they deserve, and every so often a game simply falls through the cracks and gets almost no attention at all. Arx Fatalis falls solidly into the third category and this is a real shame considering it has the unique distinction of being a decent role playing game for the Xbox.
Your name is Am Shaegar – a foreign phrase that means he who has no name. No name means no memory of the past or why you are locked in a cell deep underground beneath a sunless world. The story is long and one of woe. The city of Arx once proudly stood above ground, basking in the warmth of the sun. But after the death of the king, the sun gradually began to diminish. The new king, knowing that...
In theory, the life of a video-game critic should be one of the most pleasant in all creation, rating slightly below Playboy photographer, and well above Playboy circulation manager. In practice, it's often one of intense frustration, and not just when one is assigned to review the latest SpongeBob SquarePants extravaganza.
