Strengths: Solid racing title on Gamecube, a system with a lack of such games.
Weakness: Framerate sometimes suffers, track variety lacking (all 'downtown' settings)
Need for Speed Underground is an excellent racing title for the much neglected Gamecube console. It is perhaps just a notch below the best GC racing title - Burnout 2.
The element that this game adds is an immense amount of customization. Some, however, may be disappointed that this customization is pretty much limited to cosmetic options. In terms of engine, handling, etc, there are simply 3 levels of upgrade to unlock and you will always want to upgrade when you can. So some people who prefer to tweak the performance of the car might not find the game very interesting. Bit for the casual racer fan this is just fine.
The main story mode consists of 111 objectives to complete in downtown racing sites. These consist of regular races, drag races, and drift competitions. By completing these objectives you progress in the story and unlock special parts and upgrades.
Overall this is an excellent racing title and well worth a look if you are a fan of the arcade racing experience.
Strengths: Realistic driving, good story mode, decent graphics.
Weakness: Cheesy crashes, difficulty, tracks are kind of repetitive.
NFS Underground is a good sequel to the Need For Speed franchise. EA really focused on the customization of cars in this game. With each race, you can earn money to buy new parts and vehicles. The story mode is pretty varied, with drag races, drift challenges, knockouts, circuits, and more, so it should keep you entertained for a while. According to my brother, the story mode gets kind of difficult toward the end, which could be good or bad.
Underground focuses mainly on simulating street racing, so if you were a fan of the Hot Pursuit games, you won't be able to evade cops anymore. I was kind of disappointed because I've enjoyed the Hot Pursuit series, but if you're a street racing fan, NFS Underground should be a good selection. It's quite cheap by now, since the release of NFS Underground 2.
The game industry is producing more and more "street" or "underground" titles from the regular or traditional gaming modes. Need For Speed Underground is one of the best among those titles. The graphic is great on Game Cube. Control of the game is smooth and easy. The racing in the heart of the city provides extra fun and excitement. It is really cool to drive your own car and race through the street. You can even pimp your own ride by win races. Only thing can be improved is the magnitude of the virtual city the whole game base on. You can find similar scenery here and there once in a while. Especially, after you play the game for a while.
This is the best among the "need for speed" series so far!!! I have played for many hours and yet I am still addicted to the games. The graphic is also decent.
Need for Speed Underground receives an overall TopTenREVIEWS rating of 3.4 out of 4.00. It is ranked the #840 game of all time, #23 game of 2003 for the GameCube and #71 GameCube game of all time. Electronic Arts is well-known for its famous Need for Speed racing franchise. Last year's Hot Pursuit 2 made a great impression on the gaming press, and went on to be one of the best racing titles of the year. A scant twelve months later, EA's at it again, although this time the focus of the game is illegal street racing. Reputation, pimped-out rides, slick imports and style are the name of the...
Only a year gone and Electronic Arts is already burning rubber with another Need for Speed title. Last year the publisher released Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, a fantastic racer on the PlayStation 2, but one not quite as polished on other platforms. Since developer Black Box was responsible for the slick PS2 iteration, EA recruited them to develop the next in the franchise.
Need for Speed: Underground
Strengths: The best graphic detail I have ever seen.
Weakness: None so far.
I have been an avid racing fan for years. I highly recommend this game to any one who loves to put the pedal to the metal!
